What Happens When Your IT Guy Goes On Holiday?

It was a sunny Monday morning - a rare one - and everyone in the office was in good spirits. The coffee machine was working, the Wi-Fi seemed stable and spirits were high. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, everything.

Because Dave, the company’s one-man IT wizard, had just boarded a flight to Tenerife.

Monday: The Calm Before the Storm

At first, all was well. “We’ll be fine” said Jane from accounts - “he’s only gone for a week.”

Then, at 10:37 a.m., someone uttered the words every office dreads:

“The printer’s stopped working.”

Normally, Dave would appear out of thin air, mutter something about drivers and have it fixed before your tea went cold. But this time, Dave was halfway through a piña colada, blissfully unaware.

The team tried turning it off and on again. Twice.
Then they tried Google.
Then they gave up and started taking photos of invoices with their phones.

Tuesday: The Password Crisis

By Tuesday, the Wi-Fi password was the problem. Nobody could remember it.
It was written “somewhere safe”, which turned out to be on a sticky note - under Dave’s keyboard.

Meanwhile, the director was on a Teams call that froze every 30 seconds. “It’s fine,” he said through gritted teeth. “Totally fine.”

Wednesday: The Great Email Lockout

Midweek, chaos truly struck.

Half the office was locked out of their email accounts after a security update.

Someone suggested creating new accounts. Someone else tried guessing Dave’s admin password (spoiler: it wasn’t “password123”).

Eventually, everyone resorted to sending messages via WhatsApp, which made the compliance manager twitch.

Thursday: The External Hard Drive Incident

Desperation set in. “We’ll just back it up manually,” said Mike from sales, plugging in an old hard drive. The drive made a noise that sounded like a dying robot. Everyone stepped back.

It was at that moment someone uttered, “We should really have proper IT support.”

Friday: Dave Returns

Friday morning, Dave returned to 493 unread emails, 27 sticky notes, and one burnt-out coffee machine.

“Did you miss me?” he asked cheerfully.

Nobody spoke.
